DU Flex Image IdentityIn search of a way to deal with the spiraling costs of health care, the University looked for a solution that would not simply shift costs to the employee but provide high-quality care at reasonable cost. To that end, DUFlex was launched in November of 1990.

DUFlex is Duquesne University's sponsored flexible benefits program, which is classified as a "Cafeteria Style Plan" under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. DUFlex helps you in two important ways:
Choice: It affords the employee the opportunity to choose the benefits which best suit their needs, and;

Control: It provides the University with a means of controlling costs while giving an employee the flexibility to spend benefit dollars more wisely.
DUFlex also passes along tax saving features by allowing an employee to purchase most additional benefits with pre-tax dollars, thus saving on federal income tax and FICA taxes.
The following benefits are available through your DUFlex enrollment:
• Health Care • Dental
• Vision • Flexible Spending Accounts
• Employee Core Term Life Insurance • Long Term Disability
• Dependent Term Life Insurance • Vacation Purchase
• Voluntary Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

• Employee Supplemental Term Life Insurance

• Business Travel Accident Insurance

ELIGIBILITY

Employees: All qualified full-time, non-temporary employees of Duquesne University who have satisfied the waiting period are eligible to participate in DUFlex. Represented employees may be eligible to participate, depending on their bargaining agreement.

Dependents: Click here to review dependent eligibility requirements.

WAITING PERIOD

Employees: The waiting period to participate in DUFlex is the same for all qualified, non- represented, full-time, non-temporary employees of Duquesne University. An employee is eligible to participate in this plan on the first day of the month coinciding with or following the date of hire. Represented employees must refer to their specific bargaining agreements for a definition of the waiting period.

FLEX CREDITS
The University provides each employee with credits to assist in the purchase of benefits. These credits are called "Flex Credits". The Flex Credits available for purchase of your benefits are indicated on your personalized enrollment information. Your credits are determined by your years of service and enrollment status. Your income levels have no bearing on the amount of your flex credits.

Flex credits, which are equivalent to dollars, appear on the left hand portion of your pay stub as an income line on each biweekly paycheck.

Enrolling in Benefits
After your completion of proper tax forms, and our internal verification of your employment status, the Benefits Office will campus mail a New Hire Enrollment Guide. This Enrollment Guide provides a brief overview of your options. To begin your enrollment process, contact the Benefits Office at (412) 396-5105 to schedule a new employee orientation. The Benefits Office staff will meet with you to review the various plans and assist with the completion of the enrollment process. Enrollment is completed using a secure online web site. You can access the web site while at work or in the privacy of your own home. Complete directions for web site enrollment can be found on page nine of this guide. When making your selections, remember that the Duquesne University benefits plan year runs from July 1 to June 30.
